Auteur Wines in Sonoma is known for great quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and has quietly built a passionate following since its founding in 2003 by Kenneth and Laura Juhasz.

Its exceptional, small-lot varietals are sourced from sustainable vineyards in distinct micro-terroirs along the Northern California Coast.  We recently tried two of their wines, 2023 Auteur Bacigalupi Chardonnay, SRP: $65 and their 2022 Auteur Balinard Pinot Noir, SRP: $85 and were bowled over with their finesse and complexity.

The Auteur 2023 Bacigalupi Vineyard Chardonnay is elegant and balanced with notes of ripe melon, grilled peach, and mango puree, complemented by a subtle orange blossom aroma. We were entranced with its inviting aromas of vanilla and citrus, a smooth, velvety texture, and a satisfying, long finish. This wine is both enjoyable in its youth and capable of aging well. 

Our first impression of the 2022 Auteur Balinard Pinot Noir was of fennel pollen, evergreen, and warm baking spice that segued to a pure cardinal-hued ripe core of cherry and rhubarb. The sublime texture is a silken tapestry of velvety strata, meticulously crafted to enjoy while young, but showing a remarkable ability to cellar; a Burgundy collector’s dream. This pocket vineyard, nestled close to Occidental in the Green Valley sub-appellation of the Russian River, benefits from cool temperatures moderated by persistent morning fog and porous Goldridge soils.
