One of the mantras of the trusted Red Carnation Hotel Company is “Because we care.” No where is this more apparent than at their Knightsbridge property, the handsome Egerton House Hotel. Located a credit car’s throw from Harrod’s, the Egerton is intimate, understated and the epitome of refined elegance. You might not even notice it as you pass by. A classic Victorian brick townhouse with a British flag, flowering window boxes and smartly clipped topiary trees is all that gives an indication something good is happening inside. Climb the stairs and entering, it feels like you have gained acceptance to one of London finest clubs. A small, sunny antique-filled sitting room with fireplace is off to the left, reception manned by gentleman and ladies, straight ahead. It is all serene and civilized here. You are shown to a room or suite. The stylish décor is of the highest standard, like a West End aristo might have had in the old days, original pieces of furniture and art, rare fabrics on the walls, but with the most modern of baths and amenities. Housekeeping is artful. Michelle Devlin, the charming Manager, came up through housekeeping and it shows. All is meticulous at the Egerton. Prepare yourself for incredible service. A small clubby bar off the lobby is the domain of Antonio who has 40 years of experience and makes the best martinis in England. Delicious snacks are served here. There is no formal restaurant but just ask and menu will be produced for dishes served in the bar or your room. We can recommend Bea’s Chicken Noodle Soup (influenced by Beatrice Tollman, President and Founder of the Red Carnation Hotels) to something more substantial such as Aberdeen Angus sirloin steak or Chef’s delicious Wagyu burger. Aternoon Tea is a great British tradition, and each afternoon the Egerton Drawing Room is the right place to be if you want to feast on freshly baked scones with thick clotted cream and homemade fruit preserves. A tempting assortment of delicate finger sandwiches and pastries, accompanied by your choice of tea or coffee, complete this classic treat. A stay in a small, boutique hotel doesn’t mean you have to forego your fitness routine. The Egerton has a partnership with the nearby LA Fitness Platinum spa and health club (five minutes walk away in Pelham Street, South Kensington) that gives guests all the facilities needed. A day pass to LA Fitness includes free use of the club’s swimming pool, sauna, Jacuzzi, steam room, exercise studio, cardio theatre, and fitness room. Plus you can also book a personal trainer and a crèche/kids’ club. In a busy city like London, the Egerton is a true sanctuary where you will be treated gentle care and the politest of English hospitality.
