Beaverbrook Town House: London’s most charming small hotel

London’s most charming boutique hotel has got to be Beaverbrook Town House, a true treasure in the historic heart of Chelsea well known to savvy insiders who want to be transported into quintessential British charm and the flamboyant spirit of Lord Beaverbrook, the powerful 20th century baron who made his name as a formidable publisher, financier and politician. Curated by Nicola Harding and Sir Frank Lowe, the interior design overflows with vibrant colors, 1920s flair, and over 500 pieces of artwork and Japanese master prints. Imagine two beautifully restored Georgian townhouses, home to 14 exquisitely designed suites, each inspired by celebrated London theatres.

We’re not surprised that the amazing partnership of Joel Cadbury and Ollie Vigors who as a team reinvigorated the Groucho Club (where Soho’s artistic, liberal flame burns bright, a private watering hole that plays a vital part in London’s role as a creative powerhouse on the world stage) among other popular projects are the forces behind the Beaverbrook Town House. Joel and Ollie can be relied on to produce compelling vibrating energy and creative quality. Joel practically grew up at Annabel’s amongst the genetically and financially blessed and he learned from the best–Mark Birley. Mr. Vigors is no slouch having spent much of his life sleeping and dining in the world’s finest hotels and evaluating their magic. The Cadbury-Vigors duo knows exactly how to create and maintain a seamlessly high level of quality. Hence, The Fuji Grill Japanese restaurant has become a favorite with a blue-blooded crowd and features tapas, a fresh dining concept that blends the precision and artistry of Japanese cuisine with the relaxed spirit of small plate culture. Shared dishes of modern Japanese flavors are served family style, creating a warm and convivial experience.

Sir Frank’s Bar is usually packed with pretty, leggy beauties and their handsome swains. It’s easy to join in the fun with London’s glitterati at Sir Frank’s while sampling a delectable range of edible delicacies and then pull up a stool, or slide into a cozy leather-lined booth with your favorite tipple and enjoy the dazzling Art-Deco decor bar and bustling, convivial ambience. Beaverbrook Town House boasts a prime perch near stylish Sloane Street, overlooking the leafy-green grandeur of Cadogan Gardens. Beaverbrook Town House reimagines the flamboyant Lord Beaverbrook’s colorful life in London, where he hosted world leaders, literary greats and Hollywood stars in singular charismatic style. His actual London home was The Vineyard, a tiny Tudor mansion on the Hurlingham Road in Fulham, and these fine Georgian townhouses, sited at the most exclusive end of Sloane Square, are the perfect vessels to replay Lord Beaverbrook’s fabled hospitality.

To their great credit, the well-trained, whip-smart staff here cheerily attends to every need without fanfare and they remain tight-lipped about the comings and goings of their rather distinguished guests. Applause should be directed at Jorge de Jesus, the eagle-eyed general manager who runs the show here with grace and finesse.
